How far is Starfish Blue from the Nadi airport?
About 2 - 2.5 hours. The drive is beautiful- along the coast and through villages. You have to go a bit slow for all of the animals and people that walk along the road, but it's worth the journey. You'll see a side to Fiji that many visitors miss.
How can we get there?
You can either rent a car at the Nadi airport, (driving is on the left-hand side) or arrange to have Sun Coast Taxis take you. Sun Coast Taxis will meet you outside of customs with a sign with your name on it, arrange for key pick up, and deliver you to our house, all for slightly less than a taxi from Nadi. The benefit for you is that they know Starfish Blue so there is no risk of them getting lost, and they can arrange for key pick up. Email Jai at suncoasttours@connect.com.fj for more details.
Can we use the resort facilities at Wananavu?
Yes! Wananavu is happy to have our guests visit the resort. You're welcome to dine at the restaurant, swim in the pool, join the day trips, shop in the gift shop and use the internet. Fees apply to many things. In addition, there are small fees for non-resort guests for things like kayak rental and such, but it's very reasonable. When you arrive, you will just check in at Wananavu if you plan to use the resort, and give them an imprint of your credit card, and you can use the resort just like a guest. You'll receive a number just like other guests, and you check out upon leaving. You're also welcome to walk or drive over and just use the pool or beach.
What is provided at Starfish Blue?
We know you've traveled a long way and we've tried to think of everything to make your holiday an enjoyable and relaxing one. We provide beach and bath towels, linens, all sorts of kitchen items from plates and glasses to a blender and a panini maker, gas grill, CD players for each room (they can also be taken out by the pool if you like) and a TV with DVD player with a selection of DVD's. We now have Sky Satelite TV. We also have a phone for keeping in touch with loved ones and Wananavu has internet connection for a fee. If traveling with a baby, we offer a crib (cot) and high chair. There is a washing machine (we ask that you dry your clothes on the line out back unless it's raining but we do have a dryer in a pinch) and even snorkel gear. We only provide masks and snorkels, to snorkel off from our property you will need reef shoes as it's very rocky. You're welcome to take the gear to Wananavu or to Nananu-I-Ra Island for the day.
Is there a sandy beach nearby?
Our beach area is quite rocky. It's actually a grassy hill that does down to the sea. Wananavu, which is walking distance, offers a large sandy beach with loungers, and Nananu-I-Ra, which is a 10 minute boat ride, offers gorgeous sandy beaches with hammocks and loungers. Note- they do not offer bathroom facilities for day-trippers, although you are welcome to lounge on their beach and eat at their restaurant. They offer fabulous off-beach snorkeling. You can also enter from their pier, where they feed the large and docile fish each day. Great for picture taking.
Our water is great for snorkeling, and we provide masks and snorkels at the house. (You'll want reef shoes.) One fun thing to do is to snorkel down to Wananavu, relax on the beach for a while, and swim or walk back.
Is it possible to hire additional help?
We provide maid service, if you want it, (and not everyone does, so it's perfectly fine to opt out of it for the whole time or as you would like) Monday through Friday for 2 hours a day. Setya can also cook for you or provide a local woman to do so, and we can also arrange for a nanny/babysitter. It's easier if you let us know ahead of time, and we can set it up in advance. You pay Setya or whoever works for you at the end of your stay in Fijian dollars. The rate is approximately FJD$3/hour. See Dining for meal options cooked for you at Starfish Blue.
Are there grocery stores nearby?
Yes, in town, there are 4 or 5 grocery stores, a bread store, and an open air market. Setya can also tell you where to get fresh fish. Being in a rather rural part of the island, the selection at the grocery stores is not fantastic. There is a butcher shop in Lautoka for beef and chicken, and the grocery stores are better stocked in Lautoka, so if you're going to be staying a while or if it's convenient, it's nice to stock up there. If you're only doing some meals at the house and eating out some, Rakiraki is fine. You cannot get ground coffee (even though we have a coffee maker) in Rakiraki, so either stop in Lautoka if that is important to you or try to bring some from home.
What should I bring?
The area in front of our house is very rocky, so if you want to access the water from the house, please bring reef shoes. If you're going to snorkel, you might want an underwater camera. Do not pack any film in your checked luggage as the high intensity x-ray machines will destroy it.
